Hoover Dam from Las Vegas at a glance
Hoover Dam from Las Vegas is an easy half-day trip. The dam lies 30 to 35 miles (48 to 56 km) southeast of the city, depending on where you start. From the airport the drive takes about 45 minutes, not counting the security check at the dam.
You have three practical options: drive yourself, join a tour with hotel pickup, or fly over the dam by helicopter. Public transport does not take you to the Visitor Center, so the choice is mostly between your own car and a tour.

Our picks: Hoover Dam trips from Las Vegas
All three pick you up in Las Vegas. Take the inside tour for the generator room, the half day for a simple dam tour with a driver-guide, and the mini tour if you only have the morning.

Ways to get from Las Vegas to the dam
Prices for 2026, extras not included.
| Way | Time | Cost | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your own car | About 45 minutes from the airport | Fuel plus $10 for the Nevada garage; Arizona lots 13 and 14 are free | You choose your hours and your lot |
| Small-group tour with hotel pickup | β | From $109 per person | Powerplant Tour, Visitor Center and a guided walk on the crown; lunch and tips extra |
| Helicopter flight | 35 to 40 minutes in the air | From $219 per person | Dam, Lake Mead, river and Strip; no landing at the dam |
| City bus, route 221 | β | β | Serves Boulder City, but does not continue to the Visitor Center |
| Shuttle to Boulder City | β | β | Ends in the Boulder City Historic District, not at the dam |
For most visitors without a car, a tour with hotel pickup is the simplest choice, because it covers the transport and the Powerplant Tour in one booking. With a car, driving yourself is cheaper and more flexible. Choose the flight when the view from above matters more than time at the dam.
Driving from Las Vegas to Hoover Dam
The route is short and well signed.
The route
Take I-11 South and US-93 South to exit 2, then follow NV-172, the Hoover Dam Access Road. The distance is 30 to 35 miles, depending on the start point.
Time
About 45 minutes from the airport is a guide, not a promise. It does not include waiting at the security checkpoint, and it does not apply from every Strip hotel.
Parking
The Nevada garage and Arizona lot 9 cost $10 per vehicle. Arizona lots 13 and 14 are free, and there is no guarantee of a free space. Large vehicles, RVs and trailers use the signed Arizona lots.
Getting there βOn to Arizona
The old dam road is not a through route. To continue into Arizona, go back on US-93 and I-11 and cross the bypass bridge. You can walk the bridge for free.
Memorial Bridge βWithout a car: tours and buses
What reaches the dam and what stops short.
Tour with hotel pickup
The small-group example starts at $109 per person, takes ages 5 and up and a maximum of 14 guests, with daily departures. Pickup covers selected Las Vegas hotels, not every hotel, so confirm yours when you book. Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before.
Hoover Dam tours βPublic bus
Route 221 serves Boulder City and its connections, but it does not stop at the Visitor Center. A bus stop in Boulder City is not a stop at the dam.
Shuttle to Boulder City
One operator runs a one-way shuttle from Las Vegas to the Boulder City Historic District. It is useful for the town, not for reaching the dam itself.

Hoover Dam from Las Vegas: frequently asked questions
How far is Hoover Dam from Las Vegas?
It is 30 to 35 miles (48 to 56 km) southeast of Las Vegas, depending on the start point. From the airport, the drive takes about 45 minutes.
Can I take a bus from Las Vegas to Hoover Dam?
Not directly. Route 221 reaches Boulder City but not the Visitor Center. A tour with hotel pickup or your own car gets you to the dam itself.
Is a tour worth it compared with driving?
If you have a car, driving costs less and gives you free timing. A tour with hotel pickup makes sense without a car, since it bundles transport, the Powerplant Tour and a guided walk on the crown.
How long should I plan for a trip from Las Vegas?
Plan a half day. Add the drive, the security check, parking and your tour. The Powerplant Tour takes about 30 minutes plus a short film.
Will the hotel pickup come to any hotel?
Not necessarily. Pickup covers selected Las Vegas hotels, so confirm your hotel when you book.
